How to add opening hours with split shifts in WordPress

Add opening hours with lunch and dinner shifts in the block editor, with a live open now badge, holidays and schema for local search.

Many businesses open in two parts of the day: a lunch service and an evening one, or a clinic with a break in the middle. A single row of hours cannot show that. This guide adds opening hours with split shifts to a WordPress page using the PlexBlocks Business Hours block.

What you need

Install and activate the plugin

In your dashboard open Plugins, then Add New, and search for PlexBlocks Business Hours. Install it and press Activate.

Add the block to a page

Open the page where the hours should appear, for example your contact page. Type /business hours on an empty line and press Enter. The block appears with sample hours, so you can see right away how it looks.

Pick a layout

Open the block settings in the sidebar. The block comes with ten layouts, from a plain list to a card with a live pulse dot and a ticking clock. Clicking a layout changes the look and keeps the hours you entered. For a restaurant a list or a card usually reads best. A compact layout suits a footer or a sidebar.

Set the hours

Enter the opening and closing time for each day. Switch a day to closed if you do not open at all.

Add a second slot for a split shift

Click the plus button under a day to add another time slot. For a restaurant that serves lunch and dinner you could enter 11:00 to 15:00 for the first slot and 18:00 to 23:00 for the second. Remove a slot with the cross next to it.

Check the timezone and the labels

The live Open now badge follows a timezone. By default it uses the one set in WordPress under Settings, General. You can choose another one in the block settings if the business is in a different place from the site owner. You can also change the Open and Closed wording, for example to We are open or Kitchen closed.

Add holidays

Open the holiday panel and pick a date, or a range of dates, on the small calendar. Give each closure a title such as Christmas Day. On those days the block shows the holiday notice instead of the normal hours.

Turn on schema markup

Switch on schema markup in the settings panel. The block then adds LocalBusiness structured data to the page head, with a separate entry for every slot, so search engines can read both parts of the day. Check the page afterwards with Google’s Rich Results Test.

Before you publish

  • look at the page on a phone, the layouts adapt to small screens
  • make sure the timezone is right
  • if the block sits in a menu link, add an HTML anchor such as hours in the Advanced panel and link to #hours

That is all. The block needs no extra settings page and loads no jQuery or external fonts.
